COURSE DESCRIPTION

Grose Valley, Grand Canyon, Perrys Lookdown, Blue Gum Forest, Lockleys Pylon - just a few of the new additions ready to welcome you as you embark on your journey through the Blue Mountains National Park. Alongside Narrow Neck, Ironpot Ridge, Leura Forest, Wentworth Falls, Kedumba Pass, Furber Steps – names that have that become trail running legend as part of the iconic UTA100 course.

It’s the race that every trail runner in Australia has been waiting for!

You start in Blackheath as you descend and climb your way through the majestic Grose Valley. Highlighted by a trip through Grand Canyon and unmatched 360 degree views from the top of Lockleys Pylon. Pit stop at the Hydro Majestic Hotel overlooking the Megalong Valley, giving you a glimpse of what's to come. Then, you'll connect with the UTA100 course at Narrow Neck Lookout as you experience a mix of terrain - mostly single track and wide trails - and a mix of emotions as you continue to run through the very special World Heritage listed national park of the Blue Mountains.

After some lush bushland, beautiful escarpments, epic ridgelines and about 99 miles, you’ll stand at the bottom of the most famous set of steps in trail running... just 951 of them are between you and the finish line back at Scenic World.

KEY INFO FOR UTAMiler RUNNERS

All the information you need to know before starting an extraordinary adventure.

CHECKPOINTS

The UTAMiler has 12 checkpoints along its route, with differing levels of service, support crew access and supplies. The UTA100 checkpoints offer you the opportunity to refuel, rehydrate, see your support crew and prepare for the next leg of your journey!
Read more about checkpoints

DROP BAGS

A drop bag service will be available which allows you to have your own personal supplies (gels, food, change of socks, shoes, shorts, lubricant, etc.) available at certain check points or at the finish. Please see the time charts above for information on which checkpoints have drop bags.
Read the rules on drop bags

MANDATORY GEAR

Every runner at UTA will have to carry mandatory gear. The mandatory gear list contains what we believe is the absolute minimum to keep you safe during the event and in the Blue Mountain’s unpredictable weather systems. For UTAMiler runners, your gear will need to be checked pre-race.
Read Mandatory Gear rules

START GROUPS

To help congestion on the course and ensure an enjoyable and safe race for everyone, we have a tried-and-tested start group process to match-up runners of similar abilities. Find out more about the start group request process, seeding options and start group times.

TRAINING ON COURSE

A large portion of the UTA courses are publically accessible throughout the year, offering the opportunity to train on course prior to raceday. Please take care and give way to members of the general public when training on course. Some sections of the course are on private land, so please read about these before heading out.

SUPPORT CREW

We love support crews almost as much as our runners at Ultra-Trail Australia by UTMB – you are always the most colourful (and loudest!) and a huge part of the magical atmosphere of the whole weekend.

You also have the very important job of getting your runners to the finish line.

First job for support crew is to read the support crew section in the Runner Guide, available one month before the event. It contains important information you will need to know for the event.

To keep the event manageable as well as fair and safe for all athletes, and to make sure support crews do not get lost, there is some information that support crews need to know.

  • Support crews can only assist their runners within the bounds of the Checkpoint.
  • Support crews are only allowed to assist runners at Checkpoints 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 (these checkpoints can be accessed with a standard 2-wheel drive)
  • For safety reasons, support crews are not allowed at, or anywhere along Glenraphael Drive/Narrow Neck, Checkpoint 3, Checkpoint 6, or Checkpoint 7, even just to spectate.
  • Support crews cannot drive, ride or walk on any section of Mt. Hay Road, Glenraphael Drive/Narrow Neck.
  • Support crews cannot run alongside their runners at any point on the course outside of the aid stations.

For more helpful information please visit the Transport Services page and Spectators page.

PACERS

Pacers are companion runners that can accompany a UTAMiler athlete from various points. You can view pacer pickup locations in the table above. Pacers run for free but must be registered online. A link to register can be found on the athlete's registration confirmation email. The Pacer's role is to accompany their athlete, to provide moral support, pacing advice and companionship in the latter stages of the event.

There are strict rules regarding pacing:

  • Pacers MUST register themselves online as they will be required to sign a waiver.
  • All Pacers must wear a compulsory race bib number. Pacer(s) must attend Runner Check-in to collect their bib.
  • The minimum age for Pacers is 18 years old.
  • Pacer numbers will be light green and match the number of your athlete. This is so we know you are part of the event.
  • Pacers must carry their own set of mandatory clothing and equipment items to match that required by the UTAMiler runners.
  • Pacers cannot meet their runner before or after the designated start locations or at intermediate points. Doing so results in disqualification.
  • Competitors can use three Pacers – but only one at a time (they must change over at a checkpoint).
  • If you plan to make an exchange, you must hand over your pacer number to the next pacer.
  • Pacers are responsible for their own transport.
  • There are no Pacers for UTA11, UTA22, UTA50, or UTA100 runners.
  • Pacers may not carry extra water, food or equipment for runners.
  • With the exception of an emergency or medical situation, Pacers cannot provide any material or physical assistance to their athletes.
